How to Plan the Perfect Boat Proposal on the Amalfi Coast
(From a Local Photographer Who’s Done This Dozens of Times)
A boat proposal on the Amalfi Coast? Romantic. Timeless. Iconic. But here’s the truth: it takes real planning to make it feel effortless.
I’m a professional photographer based here in Amalfi, and I’ve photographed countless boat proposals in Positano, Amalfi, and around Capri. I know exactly what works—and what you definitely want to avoid. So if you’re thinking about proposing at sea, here’s how to make it incredible from the moment you step on board to the second you hear “YES!”
Book the Right Boat (And Make Sure It’s at Least 7.5 Meters)
This is the first thing I tell every couple: don’t book a boat under 7.5 meters (about 25 feet). Anything smaller and the movement will be too noticeable—especially when you’re trying to stand, kneel, or hold a ring steady. Bigger boats = more stability = a smoother experience.
Some trusted local vendors I love working with:
My Sea Living Positano @mysealiving_positano
Positano By Boat @gattonero_positano
Sea Wolf Positano @seawolfpositano
Just let them know you’re planning to propose—they’ll help you find the calmest spot on the sea.
Time It Right: Calm Water and Golden Light
People imagine a calm, glassy sea... but Amalfi isn’t always like that. Wind and waves pick up in the afternoon, especially in summer. The best time to propose? Early morning or golden hour—less wind, better light, more privacy.
Also: stay near the center of the boat when proposing. It's more stable than the bow (front), even if the bow looks prettier.
Protect the Ring
Use a secure ring box—bonus if it floats. Practice opening it while sitting or kneeling (on land!) before the big day. Trust us, no one wants to see a diamond drop into the ocean.
Dress Smart for Style and Comfort
Yes, Amalfi boat proposals are stylish—but they’re also outdoors, windy, and sometimes warm. Choose elegant, breathable outfits: linen shirts, relaxed dresses, soft tones.
Avoid heels, overly flowy fabrics, or anything you’ll be adjusting constantly. Barefoot on a boat is always a classic look (and safe).
Bring Motion Sickness Meds (Just In Case)
Even if you think you’ll be fine, I always recommend taking motion sickness medication at least 30 minutes before boarding. It’s just not worth the risk—especially when nerves and excitement are already in the mix. Ginger chews or seabands can help, but nothing beats being prepared.
Hire a Photographer Who Knows the Coast
Capturing a proposal on the water is very different from shooting on land. You need to know how to handle motion, light shifts, and timing. I’ve spent years photographing proposals right here on the Amalfi Coast, and I’ll help you plan everything—from the ideal boat and time of day, to how to keep the surprise without giving it away.
